Suzanne Joy Teune is a visual artist based out of Asheville, North Carolina. Her mission is to live and create art from the impulses of her heart and to be a healing presence in the world through art.
“I paint from my heart. Working from the subconscious is important to me in my work because of its authenticity and healing potential. My paintings are an outpouring of my healing journey. What I have learned over the years of struggling with feelings of depression and self-doubt is that connecting with and trusting my heart is the only way to find freedom. I make my art the same way. I let what wants to be made unfold onto the fabric. When i make art, I am constantly checking in with myself and asking myself questions like, "Do i feel excited about this?", "Do i feel that inside my body?", "Am i bored?", "Does this feel like a chore or does this feel meaningful and playful?" I feel like this is an ongoing and evolving process. It is the same process that life offers us. It takes courage sometimes to do what we feel our heart is asking us to do. Questions come up like, "Will this sell?", "Does anybody actually care about this?" In life the questions that come up are, "What will people think?" "Will they be mad at me?" "What will happen if I do this even though its breaking the 'rules' of my family, my society, the expectations of me etc?" I feel like my art making process is a microcosm of life in this way, like a little laboratory.
When I moved to Asheville, NC from the Chicago suburbs, I found a rich inspiring community of people wise with appreciation for the earth and plant dyes. I found myself fascinated and subsequently began experimenting. It is such a gift to be able to paint with dyes straight from the earth that I foraged myself.”
